Is Your Tap Water Harming Your Health?

How many times have you gone to the sink to refill your glass and didn't think twice about the water coming out of the tap? It’s right there whenever we need it—easy to access, and we assume it’s safe to drink. But have you ever wondered what might actually be in that glass?

Tap water can contain things like lead or traces of pharmaceuticals from wastewater, and you might not even know it. Using a water filter can make a big difference for your health. In this post, we’ll dive into all the benefits of filtering your water—like getting rid of harmful chemicals, improving the taste, and strengthening your overall health.

Removal of Contaminants from Tap Water

Tap water is usually treated, but it can (and usually does!) still have things like heavy metals, pesticides, and bacteria in it. If you have ever been subjected to a "boil order", it makes you really start to think about the REAL safety of our water supply.

The EPA sets guidelines for safe drinking water, but many places still have trouble meeting those standards. If you have ever looked at your area's annual water report, you will likely see many areas that exceed "safe and accepted" levels of contaminants. Not to mention this.... 👇🏼

In addition, fluoride is added, further harming our health. The "gross factor" for me was finding out just how many pharmaceuticals end up in our drinking water. This means we are ingesting everything from anti-depressants to male & female synthetic hormones that have been "eliminated" by other people via our waste system but have not been filtered out of our drinking water.

But a very concerning contamination most people don't know about comes from the herbicide Atrazine. Studies have shown that this widely used pesticide found in our drinking water changes the gender of frogs. This study has been replicated time and time again, and the amounts used in the study were LESS than what the EPA considers "safe" levels in our water supply.

Water filters—whether they’re portable straws (I personally use this one when there's a good chance I will need to refill my Stanley cup while out and about), pitcher filters, faucet attachments, or even whole-house systems—can help get rid of a lot of these harmful substances. For example, activated carbon filters are great at removing things like chlorine, lead, pharmaceuticals, microplastics from pollution, and other toxins, making your water much safer to drink. Studies also show that a good carbon filter can remove up to 99% of lead from contaminated water, which is a pretty big deal for your health.

By making sure your water is cleaner, you’re not just protecting your health, but also your family’s well-being.

Enhanced Taste and Odor of Filtered Water

Let’s face it—water that tastes weird (Florida beach water comes to mind...🤔) or smells bad isn’t exactly appealing (and could possibly be contaminated 🤢). The good news? Not only does it make your water healthy, but a water filter can make a big difference in both taste and smell.

I think most of us have dealt with that chlorine taste or smell from tap water at some point and it’s not exactly appealing. A good filter can cut down on or even remove the chlorine, leaving you with cleaner, fresher-tasting water.

Also, for all my "Foodies" out there, using a filtration system can really step up your cooking game. Clean, fresh-tasting water makes a big difference, especially for things like boiling pasta or making soups. The water you use can affect the flavor of your dish, so filtered water can make a real change in taste.

Making the Switch

Using a water filter isn’t just about better-tasting water—it’s also about keeping you and your family healthy. If you haven’t switched to filtered water yet, now’s the perfect time to give it a shot.
